What do 6 sacks of potatoes, 4 adult-sized bowling balls and an 8-year-old child have in common? All are equal to the amount of pressure texting puts on your neck
and back.

With over 2.19 trillion text messages sent annually, there’s a fairly known condition that is plaguing smartphone users known as “text neck.” The injury involves stiffness in your neck and shoulders, and is typically caused by excessive smartphone or computer usage.

Research has shown that craning the neck over a smartphone or cell phone texting, tweeting, checking Facebook or Google+, can exert an extra 60 pounds of weight on the head of an adult, leading to potential spinal problems and maybe even surgery. The farther your head falls forward, the more dramatically the weight increases on your neck and spine.

Nachmias Chiropractic gives you two ways of avoiding painful text neck:

  1. Visit our office and have Dr. Adam Nachmias align your spine with the help of chiropractic adjustments. This will immediately take away the pain (except for some possible soreness the day after), and get your neck back into alignment.
Dr. Adam Nachmias has extensive knowledge of neck and back injuries after 25 years as a chiropractor. He recently got awarded 2016’ Best Chiropractor in New York for the 2nd year in a row, by Expertise.com.
  2. For everyday use of smartphones and computers, there is now an app, called Watch Your Neck, that monitors and alarms you when your posture is out of place. Tilting your head down while looking at your phone can result in text neck. This app has a built-in neck tracker that will signal if your phone is tilted too far back. The signal will turn green when you are properly holding your phone.  Check it out here and go and download it in your app store.

Technology is advancing, but it is always best with the traditional hands on treatment options. If you suffer from neck pain or just want to prevent this symptom to occur, you are welcome to book an appointment with Dr. Adam Nachmias Mondays through Saturdays.

Why You Should See a Chiropractor for Asthma & Allergy Relief

Why You Should See a Chiropractor for Asthma & Allergy Relief

Treat Your Asthma Symptoms with Chiropractic by Nachmias ChiropracticAllergies and asthma are some of the most common health problems in America. Nearly 40 million people, about 25 % of the population, suffer from either asthma or atopic disease. Asthma related deaths are now showing alarming figures of about 5,000 people each year.

Asthma is a very serious disease that can be life threatening in some cases. Attacks are caused by irritants, such as allergens or over-exertion, which cause the bronchioles (the smallest air passage ways in the lungs) to spasm and become congested with mucus. This shrinks the air passage and causes difficulty in breathing, wheezing, and coughing.

Even with traditional treatments like allergy shots, oral medications and corticosteroids, sickness and death from asthma and allergy reactions appears to be rising. Often the mortality is due to the side effects of these medications.

Regular chiropractic adjustments have shown to eliminate spinal misalignments, significantly increasing nerve flow energy and restoring the function of all critical organs, including the lungs, the heart and digestive systems.

Importance of Chiropractic Care when Treating Asthma & Allergies
In a recent study, children with asthma showed an overall improvement in lung capacity after only 15 chiropractic adjustments. Researcher, Alan Stoddard, stated that many diseases are due to mechanical lesions, or vertebral subluxations, of the spine. There is no question that an intimate relationship exists between the spinal column, the nervous system, and the respiratory system.

The connection between the spine, nervous system, and respiratory system can be affected in several ways. Vertebral subluxations in the neck can result in associated spasm of the musculature in the neck. When the muscles in the neck become tight, the normal flow of the lymphatic system that helps our immune system to function normally, can be interrupted. Because of this stasis in the lymph system, the immune system can become overloaded. Chiropractic adjustments will produce immediate relaxation of the neck muscles and allow normal lymph drainage to re-occur.

Chiropractic adjustments improve respiratory function by restoring normal nerve function to the muscles, which in turn may result in symptomatic improvement in bronchitis, asthma, and allergies.

The Importance of a Functioning Nervous System on the Diaphragm
The primary muscle used during breathing is the diaphragm that separates the chest and abdominal cavities. This muscle is powered by the phrenic nerve, which is composed of nerves that exit from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th vertebrae in the neck. If the nerve supply to this muscle is interfered with, as may be the case with a subluxation in the neck, the diaphragm may not function optimally and breathing may be impaired.

Accessory muscles of breathing, the sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, scalenes, and pectorals, all operate to assist the diaphragm while breathing, and like the diaphragm, all need to have a healthy nerve supply to function properly. Subluxations can interfere with the normal nerve supply to these muscles leading to muscle imbalances and a weaker respiratory system. Restoring proper nerve function through correction of vertebral misalignments not only improves muscle tone, but also aids in overall body function as well (parts taken from: langfordchiropractic.com & idealspine.com).

Chiropractic from a Scientific Perspective

Chiropractic from a Scientific Perspective

Chiropractic from a Scientific Perspective by Nachmias ChiropracticChiropractic is based on the notion that the relationship between the body’s structure (primarily that of the spine) and its function (as coordinated by the nervous system) affects health.

Although, practitioners may use a variety of treatment approaches, they primarily perform chiropractic adjustments or so called spinal manipulations to correct misalignments, alleviating pain, improving body function, and to support the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Most research on chiropractic has focused on spinal manipulation. Spinal manipulation appears to benefit people with low-back pain and is also helpful for headaches, neck pain, upper- and lower-extremity joint conditions, and whiplash-associated disorders.

Like with most treatments there are some mild side effects you might experience after chiropractic adjustments. They can include; temporary headaches, tiredness, or discomfort in the parts of the body that were treated. There have been rare reports of serious complications such as stroke, but whether spinal manipulation actually causes these complications is unclear. Safety remains an important focus of ongoing research.

Chiropractors may combine the use of spinal adjustments and other manual therapies with several other treatments and approaches such as:

  • Heat and ice
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Rehabilitative and general exercise
  • Counseling about diet, weight loss, and other lifestyle factors

A 2010 review of scientific evidence on manual therapies for a range of conditions concluded that spinal manipulation/mobilization may be helpful for several conditions in addition to back pain, including migraine and cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches, neck pain, upper- and lower-extremity joint conditions, and whiplash-associated disorders (Parts taken from: nccih.nih.gov).

Injured On the Job? Nachmias Chiropractic is here For You!

When a work injury happens, your chiropractor might not be the first health care provider you think about calling, but there are lots of reasons and evidence that you should!
Chiropractic is gaining force and is a great treatment for lots of different health issues. In fact, recent scientific research shows that chiropractic is a fantastic way of helping employees prevent work injuries and recover quickly if an accident occurs and they have been injured.

Chiropractic for Work Related Injuries – Evidence and Research

  • Chiropractic cuts healthcare costs for employees. A study from 2012 found that when employees visit a chiropractor, they spend less money on health care.
  • Musculoskeletal pain is the largest cause of lost work time. Chiropractic is the best way to treat and recover from back pain, neck pain, sciatica, migraines/tension headache etc. Chiropractic also reduces stress in any form, and increases the body’s ability to coop with for example; work related stress.
  • Chiropractic actually helps prevent work disability. According to a study of employees in Minnesota, researchers found that chiropractic patients were half as likely to miss work as medical patients.
  • Chiropractic patients are shown to miss fewer days of work than medical patients. Lost time from work costs the US $61 billion a year, and chiropractic helps get people back to work quicker.
  • Medical drugs and pain killers increase the chance of disability. Chiropractic heals the body naturally through its own nervous system, without risky drugs with bad side effects or surgery.
  • Chiropractic can be an effective way to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. Repetitive strain injuries (like carpal tunnel syndrome) are a common problem in factory workers and office people, who use a keyboard all day
    (parts taken from: advancedspinenv.com).
