Improvement In Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following Chiropractic Care

Improvement In Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following Chiropractic Care

Improvement in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following Chiropractic Care by Nachmias ChiropracticA Case Study & Review of Literature

PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault.

It is normal to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping after this type of event. At first, it may be hard to do normal daily activities like go to work, go to school, or spend time with people you care about.

Abstract Of Study

Objective

This case study focuses on a 35-year-old male who presented to the office with complaints of post-deployment Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms that interfered with his ability to function on a daily basis. This study highlights the role of Network Spinal Analysis care in the improvement of PTSD symptoms in this individual.

Clinical Features

The patient presented to the office for assistance reducing his emotional stress due to post-deployment PTSD. He stated that he wished to become more resilient and gain the ability to cope with stress more effectively. His past health history included group and individual talk therapy with little improvement in PTSD symptoms.

Intervention and Outcomes

A self-rated health questionnaire was administered before and after care to measure self-reported outcomes in PTSD symptomatology. An initial examination and a post examination were performed to determine the levels of vertebral subluxation and adverse mechanical cord tension (AMCT).

The patient received 6 weeks of chiropractic adjustments – for a total of 12 visits. During each visit, an entrainment was performed in which light contacts to the cervical spine and sacrum were administered to address vertebral subluxations and AMCT.

Conclusions

This case study demonstrates improvement in post-deployment PTSD symptoms over a 6-week period of chiropractic care (source: vertebralsubluxation.sharepoint.com & ptsd.va.gov).

How Come “Cracking” Your Back Helps?

Like you probably understand from this case study, chiropractic care can treat most symptoms and conditions. You may wonder why “cracking” your back (what chiropractors call; freeing your spine from subluxations) would have such a beneficial impact on your body? The answer to that is that chiropractic adjustments help the nervous system function at its best, which in turn ensures a healthy and strong immune system that can self heal.

Improved Health Outcomes In An Asthmatic Child Following Chiropractic Care

Improved Health Outcomes In An Asthmatic Child Following Chiropractic Care

Improved Health Outcomes In An Asthmatic Child Following Chiropractic Care by Nachmias Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a healing art dedicated to keeping the nerve passages in the body open and unobstructed. This will help the entire body, including the lungs, bronchi and other structures of the respiratory system, heal and function at its best.

In this issue we will present a case study describing how a 6-year-old got healed from his asthma with the help of chiropractic adjustments, but first, let us explain the basics of asthma.

What Happens During An Asthmatic Attack?

During an asthmatic attack the bronchioles become swollen, go into spasm and fill with mucus. Asthmatics struggle for every breath, literally gasping and wheezing for life during an attack.

In some, the gasping, wheezing and struggling go on continuously and long-time suffers may develop a barrel chest. Attacks may be triggered by allergic reactions, emotional stress, physical exertion, or other irritants like cigarette smoke. In the most dangerous form of asthma, status asthmaticus, the attacks last for days and can result in death.

The Chiropractic Approach To Asthma

For over hundred years suffers of all types of respiratory conditions have sung the praises of chiropractic care. Typical among case histories is that of an 8-year-old diagnosed with asthma at age 5, who was using Beclovent and Albyterol one to three times a day. After eight chiropractic adjustments over a period of two weeks, the child had stopped inhaler use, could run without gasping, and was free of asthmatic attacks without medication.

The study below presents another positive outcome of treating asthma with chiropractic care:

Abstract Of Study

Objective

To describe the chiropractic care of a 6-year-old child medically diagnosed with asthma.

Clinical Features

A 6-year-old male presented for care with complaints associated with asthma that caused nightly attacks. The patient had a four year history of asthma that had been medically managed with: Flovent 110 twice a day, with Flovent 220 and Albuterol on as needed basis, Orapred twice a year, and Flonase at night as needed.

Chiropractic analysis revealed subluxations in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacroiliac joint region.

Intervention And Outcomes

The patient was cared for utilizing chiropractic adjustments. The patient was cared for three times per week and re-examined every 30 days.  On re-evaluation, the patient’s mother reported her child as utilizing his asthma medications only once since beginning care and improved sleep.

Conclusions

This case report illustrates the reduction of asthma symptoms and medication use in a pediatric patient under chiropractic care. It is recommended that the link between subluxation and visceral dysfunction, such as asthma be investigated further

Resolution Of Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Scoliosis And Cluster Headaches, In A Patient With Opioid Addiction Undergoing Chiropractic Care to Reduce Subluxations

Resolution Of Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Scoliosis And Cluster Headaches, In A Patient With Opioid Addiction Undergoing Chiropractic Care to Reduce Subluxations

Resolution Of Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Scoliosis And Cluster Headaches, In A Patient With Opioid Addiction Undergoing Chiropractic Care to Reduce Subluxations by Nachmias Chriropractic

The case study below describes some of many positive outcomes of chiropractic care. What chiropractic is all about is to remove blockages of the spine (which the study refers to as subluxations) and thereby help the nervous system flow freely in the body.

This in turn contributes to a strong self healing immune system that will keep ill health – mental or physical – away and also help fight against already existing immune system attacks (illnesses). Our health depends on the nervous system, so we have to ensure its optimal function, and that is exactly what chiropractic care does.

In this case study, the 21-year-old male patient, gets relief from both physical pain and mental ill health. Chiropractic even helped him overcoming his drug addiction. Find out more details from the study.

Abstract Of Case Study

Objective

To report the results of subluxation-based chiropractic care in a patient complaining of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and cluster headaches while undergoing treatment and recovery from substance abuse. The results are based on this case study and also review of literature.

Clinical Features

A 21-year-old male patient presented into a chiropractic office complaining of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and cluster headaches. Patient stated he was also undergoing substance abuse treatment. X-ray radiographs revealed a 21-degree thoracic dextroscoliosis, along with cervical hypolordosis, thoracic hypokyphosis, and lumbar hyperlordosis.

Intervention And Outcome

Initial postural and radiographic examinations were performed. After being put on an appropriate care plan, the patient was assessed and adjusted when necessary for subluxation using traditional chiropractic adjustments.

Patient was also prescribed cervical traction and therapeutic exercises. Upon completion of the care plan, the patient had a 10-degree reduction in the thoracic dextroscoliosis measurement and obtained restoration of normal cervical, thoracic, and lumbar curvature. Patient decreased and eventually stopped all medication usage and has not experienced a relapse in 4.5 years.

Conclusion

Subluxation-based chiropractic care played a role in the resolution of the patient’s complaints. The patient was able to stop all medications and live a productive life symptom free.

These are fantastic results! We hope this study has opened up your eyes to chiropractic care and what it can do for you. Treat Sciatica Symptoms With Chiropractic

Treat Sciatica Symptoms With Chiropractic

Treat Sciatica Symptoms With Chiropractic by Nachmias Chiropractic

Chiropractors regularly treat sciatica. Sciatica is characterized by pain that originates in the low back or buttock that travels into one or both legs. Sciatic nerve pain varies in intensity and frequency; minimal, moderate, severe and occasional, intermittent, frequent or constant.

Pain is described as dull, achy, sharp, toothache-like, pins and needles or similar to electric shocks. Other symptoms associated with sciatica include burning, numbness and tingling sensations. Sciatica is also called radiating or referred pain, neuropathy, or neuralgia.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is generally caused by sciatic nerve compression. Disorders known to cause sciatic nerve pain include lumbar spine subluxations, herniated or bulging discs (slipped discs), pregnancy and childbirth, tumors, and non-spinal disorders such as diabetes, and constipation.

One common cause of sciatica is piriformis syndrome. Piriformis syndrome is named after the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle is located in the lower part of the spine, connects to the thighbone, and assists in hip rotation.

The sciatic nerve runs beneath the piriformis muscle. This muscle is susceptible to injury from a slip and fall, hip arthritis, or a difference in leg length. Such situations can cause cramping and spasm to develop in the piriformis muscle, thereby pinching the sciatic nerve and causing inflammation and pain. Sciatic nerve compression may result in the loss of feeling (sensory loss), paralysis of a single limb or group of muscles (monoplegia), and insomnia.

Chiropractic Treatment of Sciatic Symptoms

The purpose of chiropractic treatment is to help the body’s potential to heal itself. It is based on the scientific principle that restricted spinal movement leads to pain and reduced function and performance.

Chiropractic Care Is A Non-Invasive And
Drug-Free Treatment Option

The type of chiropractic therapy provided depends on the cause of the patient’s sciatica. A sciatica treatment plan may include several different treatments such as ice/cold therapies, ultrasound, and spinal adjustments.

Below are more details on these chiropractic treatment modalities:

  • Ice/Cold Therapy: Reduces inflammation and helps to control sciatic pain.
  • Chiropractic Adjustments Or Spinal Manipulations: At the core of chiropractic care are spinal adjustments. Manipulation frees restricted movement of the spine and helps to restore misaligned vertebral bodies to their proper position in the spinal column.Spinal adjustment helps to reduce nerve irritability responsible for causing inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica. Adjustments should not be painful. Spinal manipulation is proven to be safe and effective (source: spineuniverse.com).

Chiropractic Boosts the Immune System And Keeps You Healthy And Strong

Chiropractic Boosts the Immune System And Keeps You Healthy And Strong

Chiropractic Boosts the Immune System And Keeps You Healthy And Strong by Nachmias ChiropracticSubluxation is the term for misalignments of the spine that cause compression and irritation of nerve pathways, which in turn affects the body’s organs.

Subluxations are an example of physical nerve stress that affects neuronal control.

According to researchers, such stressful conditions lead to altered measures of immune function and an increased vulnerability to many diseases.
Luckily, there is chiropractic care to adjust the subluxations of the spine and help strengthen the immune system and your overall health. We will explain exactly how chiropractic does this, but first, let us take a look at the nervous system and its connection to the immune system and endocrine system.

The Immune System, Endocrine System, and Nervous System

The nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system are inextricably linked. Together they share tiny messenger molecules that mediate communication between them, creating optimal responses for the body to adapt and heal appropriately.

It is important to stress that the endocrine system also impacts the immune system by producing cortisol in the adrenal glands. Endocrine glands are directly connected to the nervous system through the sympathetic nervous system. Cortisol is a stress hormone that inhibits the immune system and makes it weaker.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

Chiropractic is the only way to detect and eliminate subluxations. Chiropractic adjustments of the spine have shown to reduce stress on the nervous system, thereby boosting the coordinated responses of the nervous and immune systems.

“The chiropractic immunology connection was strengthened in 1991 when Patricia Brennan, Ph.D. and other researchers conducted a study that found improved immune response following chiropractic treatment. Specifically, the study demonstrated the “phagocytic respiratory burst of polymorphnuclear neutrophils (PMN) and monocytes were enhanced in adults that had been adjusted by chiropractors.”

In other words, the cells that act like “Pac-Man” eating and destroying bad cells, are enhanced through chiropractic care. Research has also shown that when a spinal adjustment was performed on a subluxated area, the white blood cell count collected rose significantly.

To simplify this – chiropractic adjustments remove blockages of the spine, which in turn helps the nervous system flow freely – hence boosting the immune system.

What Is This Tingling in My Leg?

What Is This Tingling in My Leg?

What Is This Tingling in My Leg? Nachmias Chiropractic tells you the facts.

When you think of low back pain, you may visualize a person half-bent over with their hand on the sore spot of their back. Since many of us have experienced low back pain during our lifetime, we can usually relate to a personal experience and recall how limited we were during the acute phase of our last low back pain episode.

However, when the symptoms associated with low back pain are different, such as tingling or a shooting pain down one leg, it can be both confusing and worrisome – hence the content of this issue.

Let us look at the anatomy of the low back to better understand where these symptoms originate. In the front of the spine (or the part more inside of the body), we have the big vertebral bodies and shock absorbing disks that support about 80 percent of our weight. At the back of each vertebrae you will find the spinous and transverse processes that connect to the muscles and ligaments in the back of the spine.

Short Pedicles A Genetic Cause

Between the vertebral body and these processes are the tiny boney pieces called the pedicles. The length of the pedicle partially determines the size of the holes where the nerves exit the spine. When the pedicles are short (commonly a genetic cause), the exiting nerves can be compressed due to the narrowed opening. This is called foraminal spinal stenosis. This compression usually occurs later in life when osteoarthritis and/or degenerative disk disease further crowds these “foramen” where the nerves exit the spine.

Similarly, short pedicles can narrow the “central canal” where the spinal cord travels up and down the spine from the brain. Later in life, the combined effects of the narrow canal plus disk bulging, osteoarthritic spurs, and/or thickening or calcification of ligaments can add up to “central spinal stenosis.”

Symptoms Of Spinal Stenosis And Treatment

The symptoms associated with spinal stenosis (whether it is foraminal or central) include difficulty walking due to a gradual increase in tingling, heavy, crampy, achy and/or sore feeling in one or both legs. The tingling in the legs associated with spinal stenosis is called “neurogenic claudication” and must be differentiated from “vascular claudication”, which feels similar but is caused from lack of blood flow to the leg(s) as opposed to nerve flow.

At a younger age, tingling in the legs can be caused by either a bulging or herniated lumbar disk or it can be referred pain from a joint – usually a facet or sacroiliac joint. The main difference in symptoms between nerve vs. joint leg tingling symptoms, is that nerve pinching from a deranged disk is located in a specific area in the leg, such as the inside or outside of the foot.

In other words, the tingling can be traced fairly specifically in the leg. Tingling from a joint is often described as a deep, “inside the leg,” generalized achy-tingling that can affect the whole leg and/or foot or it may stop at the knee, but it is more difficult to describe by the patient as it is less specific in its location.

Chiropractic treatment of all these conditions offers a non-invasive, effective form of non-surgical, non-drug care, and is the recommended in low back pain guidelines as an option when treating these conditions (source: Chiro-Trust.org).

Back Pain – Is It Caused By My Low Back Or My Hip?

Back Pain – Is It Caused By My Low Back Or My Hip?

Back Pain - Is It Caused By My Low Back Or My Hip? By Nachmias Chiropractic

For patients with low back pain, it is not uncommon for pain to arise from areas other than the low back, such as the hip. There are many tissues in the low back and hip region that are susceptible to injury with having overlapping pain pathways, which often make it challenging to isolate the truly injured area. Hip pain can present in many different ways.

Why Is It Hard To Know Where the Pain
Is Coming From?

When considering the anatomy of the low back (lumbar spine) and hip, it is often difficult differentiating between the two conditions, since the nerves that innervate the hip come from the low back. Complaints may include the inside, outside, front, or back of the thigh, the knee, the buttocks, the sacroiliac joint, or the low back and yet, the hip may truly be the pain generator with any of these presentations.

To make diagnosis even more complex, the hip pain patient may present one day with what appears to be sciatic nerve pain (that is, pain shooting down the back of the leg to the knee if mild or to the foot if more severe) but the next visit, with only groin pain.

When pain radiates down a leg, the almost automatic impression by both the patient and their healthcare provider, is that it is a pinched nerve causing the pain. But again, it could be the hip and not a pinched nerve that is creating the leg pain pattern.

The Possibility Of Several Pain Conditions
At the Same Time

Throwing yet another wrench in the works is the fact that a patient can have more than one condition at the same time. So, they truly may simultaneously have both a low back problem and a hip problem.

In fact, it is actually unusual to x-ray the low back of a hip pain patient without seeing some low back condition(s) like; degenerative disk disease, osteoarthritis (spurs off the vertebrae), or a combination of these.

How Do We Differentiate Between Hip Vs. Low Back Pain When It Is Common For Both Low Back and
Hip Pain To Coincide?

During a consultation, chiropractors often ask the question, “…what activities make your pain worse?” If the patient replies that weight bearing activities like standing, walking, getting up from a sitting position and so forth provokes the pain, and they point to the front or side of the hip, a hip-related diagnosis is favored. However, it still may be arising from the low back or both.

If they say, “…crossing my right leg over the other hurts in my groin,” then it is getting more hip pain-specific, as hip rotation is frequently lost before the forward flexion motion. When we ask the hip pain patient to point to the area of greatest discomfort, they usually point to the front of the hip or groin, and less often to the inner and/or anterior thigh or knee. Non-weight bearing positions like sitting or lying are almost always immediately pain relieving.

How To Know When It Is Arthritis?

When there is arthritis in the hip, motion loss is often reported and may include a shorter walking stride and pain that usually gets worse the longer these patients are on their feet. Initiating motion often hurts, sometimes even in bed when rolling over.

During the chiropractic examination, with the patient lying on the back with the knee and hip both bent 90°, moving the bent knee outwards or inwards will almost always reproduce hip/groin area pain. Pulling on or applying traction to the affected leg usually feels good.

Knee and ankle reflexes and sensations are normal, but muscle strength may be weak due to pain. Bending the low back into different positions does not reproduce pain if the pain is only coming from the hip. Though sometimes challenging, doctors of chiropractic are well-trained to be able to differentiate between hip and low back pain, and will treat both areas when it is appropriate (source: Chiro-Trust.org)

September Chiropractic Health Month 2017 – Back Health Basics

September Chiropractic Health Month 2017 – Back Health Basics

September Chiropractic Health Month 2017 – Back Health Basics by Nachmias Chiropractic

September Chiropractic Health Month 2017 focuses on back health basics — the importance of overall health and injury prevention as key strategies in maintaining spinal health throughout a lifetime.

Back Pain Remains One Of the Most Prevalent and Disabling Conditions Worldwide

It is one of the most common reasons that patients visit their doctors, and one of the most common conditions for which doctors prescribe pain medications. It is estimated that up to 80% of people will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives.

Opioid Painkillers – A Wide Spread Problem

In addition, with the overuse and abuse of prescription opioid painkillers in the United States still a major public health issue, it is essential for health care consumers to understand that spinal manipulation and other conservative treatments can treat common musculoskeletal conditions, such as back pain effectively and safely.

Chiropractors focus on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health and function. Chiropractic services are used most often to treat conditions such as; back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches/migraines. What people know less about is that chiropractic also treats other conditions like; allergies, asthma, stress and depression, vertigo, fibromyalgia, work related injuries, and regulates blood pressure.

Widely known for their expertise in spinal manipulation, chiropractors practice a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care that includes patient examination (even x-rays when needed), diagnosis and treatment. In addition, their training encompasses therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises and nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling.

Chiropractic Research: Improved Health Outcomes In A Woman Experiencing Chronic Post-Partum Low Back Pain

Chiropractic Research: Improved Health Outcomes In A Woman Experiencing Chronic Post-Partum Low Back Pain

Chiropractic Research: Improved Health Outcomes In A Woman Experiencing Chronic Post-Partum Low Back Pain - Nachmias ChiropracticPost-partum low back pain is common after pregnancy and many women ask why that is?

The answer to this question is that during pregnancy, your expanding uterus stretches and weakens your abdominal muscles and alters your posture, and therefore puts strain on your back.

Extra weight also means more work for your muscles and increased stress on your joints. Hormonal changes in pregnancy can loosen the joints and the ligaments that attach your pelvic bones to your spine.

This can make you feel less stable and cause pain when you walk, stand, sit for long periods, roll over in bed, get out of a low chair or the tub, bend, or lift things.

How To Treat Post-Partum Low Back Pain
After Pregnancy?

Chiropractic adjustments are the best treatment for post-partum low back pain. The study below shows proof of great results after only two chiropractic treatments on a woman in her early 30thies, who suffered low back pain after giving birth.

Abstract Of Study

Objective

To describe the outcomes related to chiropractic in a woman with post-partum back pain.

Clinical Features

A 33-year-old female presented for chiropractic consultation and care with chronic low back pain that began during pregnancy, approximately three years prior. History revealed that she had a C-section due to a small pelvic opening.

An A-P lumbosacral radiograph demonstrated significant left sacral displacement relative to the median plane.

Intervention and Outcomes

The patient was cared for with high velocity low amplitude thrust chiropractic adjustments. Chiropractic care was administered to the patient over two visits. After one sacral adjustment, comparative radiographic assessment revealed a 72% correction of the sacral subluxation and she had complete relief of symptoms.

Conclusions

This case report provides supporting evidence that women suffering from pelvic and low back pain post-partum may benefit from chiropractic care. Research on the relationship between pelvic subluxation should be further conducted (sources: babycenter.com & chiropracticpediatrics.sharepoint.com).

Back To School Advice On How To Protect Your Child’s Spine Health

Back To School Advice On How To Protect Your Child’s Spine Health

Back To School Advice On How To Protect Your Child’s Spine Health by Nachmias Chiropractic

Summer is coming to its end and it is time for your children to go back to school. A lot of excitement is building up, but it also comes with possible threats to your child’s spine.

Children need to learn to protect their spinal health for the sake of a pain-free and healthy life. One part starts at the chiropractor, but the rest are found in these suggestions to keep their little spines healthy and happy all year long!

Choosing the Right Back Pack For Your Child

Sure, your child may love that Frozen backpack or want that awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles backpack, but is it really the right backpack for them?

You have to find a backpack that will fit your child and be kind to their spine. You can do this by buying a backpack that has these characteristics:

  • It is lightweight and fits snugly against the body.
  • It is made of canvas or vinyl.
  • It has two wide, padded straps for the shoulders, as well as a waist strap.

Alas, a quality backpack is only as good as the way it is actually packed. When packing your child’s backpack, you should make sure to:

  • Put the heaviest things as close to the back as possible, close to their body.
  • Put bumpy or odd-shaped things (those 354 boxes of tissue you have to buy, for example) should not be packed against the body.
  • Keep the weight of their backpack at less than 10 percent of their body weight.

Who knew backpacks could be so complicated?

The Importance Of Classroom Posture

It is more important than you may think to have the “posture talk” on how your child needs to properly sit at their school desk. Many children sit at their desks slumped or hunched over, looking down at what they are working on or reading.

While this can not always be avoided, it is a good idea to make them aware of the fact that if they can limit the amount of time hunching down, they will prevent their backs and necks from future injuries.

When they sit in this bad posture for long periods, they are putting themselves at risk for back and neck pain or discomfort – and they are far too young for that.

To sit correctly at a desk they should:

  • Have their feet flat on the floor.
  • Keep their shoulders relaxed.
  • Sit with their back against the back of the chair.
  • Keep their ears over their shoulders and their chin tucked slightly down.
  • Keep any screens (or books) at eye level.

You have to remember that even young children can be negatively impacted by poor desk posture, which can affect their whole future, so it is never too early to give them this talk.

Start Slowly With Physical Fitness

If your child is a sports enthusiast who took a break over the summer, they will need to remember to slowly condition themselves to get back into the game. Children have this crazy idea that they have no limitations. Though their bodies do tend to be a bit more flexible than an adult’s that does not mean they should not take the time to ease back into physical activities.

Make sure they:

  • Take extra time to warm up – at least 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Take time to stretch after they finish exercising.
  • Keep their workouts reasonable for their skill level, age, and physical fitness.
  • Do a lot of activities in order to keep repetitive injuries away – kids need to try different things as they undergo muscle development as they grow.
