Why Is Uneven Leg Length Bad For Our Posture? Can It Be A Cause To Back Pain? by Nachmias Chiropractic

The focus of this article is on leg length and why it can be a contributing cause to back pain. Also, its effect on our posture, methods of assessment, and treatment.

Minimize Nerve Irritation By Aligning the Spine and Pelvis

Because the spinal cord is housed by the spine and the exiting nerve roots communicate with the autonomic nerves that basically run our organ function, maintaining alignment of the spine and pelvis is very important to minimize nerve irritation and subsequent health-related problems.

The Importance of Leg Length

Leg length plays and important role in our posture. When there is a difference in leg length, the pelvis cannot maintain a level position, and because the spine’s base is the pelvis, it cannot stay straight if there is a leg length discrepancy.

Doctors of all disciplines realize the importance of leg length, especially orthopedic surgeons as they consider a hip or knee replacement. There are many causes of leg length issues, and some include a genetic predisposition (inherited), or trauma during bone growth years.

Is A Heel Lift A Good For Uneven Leg Length?

Yes, from a treatment standpoint, a heel lift (with or without arch supports) can be placed into the shoe on the short leg side. Unfortunately, there is not a 1 – 1mm correction of the leg length deficiency with heel lifts.

In adults, it has been reported that about a 66% correction occurs, which means a 10 mm lift would result in around a 6.6mm leg length deficiency correction.

Many doctors have found that it is usually wise to gradually increase the amount of heel lifting. They recommend patients to start with a 5mm lift for 1 week, and then increase it to the next height, such as 7mm, followed by 9mm, and so forth.

At 12mm (0.5”), problems with the heel lift being pushed out of the shoe and/or sliding forwards in the shoe may prohibit the use of these thicker lifts after which point the bottom of the shoe can be built up by a shoe cobbler (some services can be found online as well).

A Better Solution Is Chiropractic Adjustments

Even better, or as a compliment to heel lift, is to pay a visit to your chiropractor. Your chiropractor can align the spine and pelvis with the help of chiropractic adjustments.

Aligning the spine and pelvis is the better solution in the long run, and includes other benefits such as; increasing your mobility and flexibility. Chiropractic adjustments also boost the immune system and make you resistant to possible illness.

This is only the “tip of the iceberg” of the many benefits chiropractic care has to offer. Find more benefits with chiropractic care in our prior article:

What Are Cervicogenic Headaches?

What Are Cervicogenic Headaches?

What Are Cervicogenic Headaches? Get Relief at Nachmias Chiropractic

Headaches are a very common problem that can have multiple causes ranging from stress to trauma.  To make matters worse, there are many different types of headaches. One such type is the “cervicogenic headache” (others include migraines, cluster headaches, etc.).

Another Type of Migraine?

The main distinction between the symptoms associated with cervicogenic headaches and those associated with migraine headaches are a lack of nausea, vomiting, aura (a pre-headache warning that a headache is about to strike), light and noise sensitivity, increased tearing with red eyes, one-sided head, neck, shoulder, and/or arm pain, and dizziness. The items listed above are primarily found in migraine headache sufferers.

The following is a list of clinical characteristics common in those struggling with cervicogenic headaches:

  • Unilateral (one-sided) head or face pain (rarely is it on both sides).
  • Pain is localized or stays in one spot, usually the back of the head, frontal, temporal (side) or orbital (eye) regions.
  • Moderate to severe pain intensity.
  • Intermittent attacks of pain that last hours to days.
  • Pain is usually deep, non-throbbing, unless migraines occur at the same time.
  • Head pain is triggered by neck movement, sustained awkward head postures, applying deep pressure to the base of the skull or upper neck region, and/or taking a deep breath, cough or sneeze can trigger head pain.
  • Limited neck motion with stiffness.

Infrequently, the cervicogenic headache sufferer can present with migraines at the same time and have both presentations making it more challenging to diagnose.

What Is Causing Cervicogenic Headaches?

The cause of cervicogenic headaches can be obvious such as trauma (sports injury, whiplash, slip and fall), or not so obvious, like poor posture. A forward head posture can increase the relative weight applied to the back of the neck and upper back double as much, or even four times more than normal.

Last month, we discussed the intimate relationship between the upper two cervical vertebra (C1 & C2) and an anatomical connection to the covering of the spinal cord (the dura) as giving rise to cervicogenic headaches.

In summary, the upper three nerves innervate the head and any pressure on those upper nerves can result in a cervicogenic headache (source: Chiro-Trust.org).

What Is Chiropractic All About?

What Is Chiropractic All About?

What Is Chiropractic All About? Nachmias Chiropractic answers common questions and answers about chiropractic care.

Questions & Answers Chiropractic Care

For some of you, chiropractic care is not familiar enough to know what is happening in the body during a treatment and the many benefits of chiropractic adjustments. If you never been to a chiropractor, you have probably heard about chiropractors as “crack doctors” and may have gotten a bit uneasy about trying a treatment.

Do not be!

In this issue, Nachmias Chiropractic is going to present some common questions and answers about chiropractic care. At the end of this article, you will have another perception of chiropractic as a health care option and are probably booking your first appointment before finish reading.

Also, know that whatever question you have and if you did not find the answer in this article, we are always here to lend a helping hand, answer all your questions, and make you feel comfortable with your treatment. But for now, let us go through some questions and answers.

Question 1: How Does Chiropractic Work?

Chiropractic works by restoring your body’s inborn ability to heal and be healthy. When your nervous system functions properly, all the organs and cells of your body can resist disease and ill health.

The chiropractic approach to better health is to locate and remove interferences (subluxation’s or misaligned vertebrae) to your nervous system. With an aligned spine the nervous system can function at its best, which in turn also boosts the immune system.

A Healthy Spine and A Healthy Lifestyle Are Your Keys to Optimal Health!

Question 2: What Is A Chiropractic Adjustment?

Answer: A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is “locked up,” or not moving properly.

The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is to eliminate interference to the nervous system, improving spinal function and overall health. Like mentioned earlier, spinal adjustments boosts your body’s immunity.

Question 3: Can I Tell If I Have A Subluxation?

Answer: No, not always.

A subluxation is like a dental cavity – you may have it for a long time before symptoms appear. That is why regular spinal checkups are so important.

Although, it may be possible to know you have a subluxation, it is rarely possible to be sure you do not. Regular spinal checkups are always good, since they promote optimal health from the inside out.

Question 4: What Is the Youngest Age for Chiropractic Care?

Answer: There is no age limit.

Newborns may need to be adjusted, especially if they had a difficult traumatic birth. There are many stories of chiropractors adjusting dying infants in hospitals with miraculous recoveries reported.

On the upper end, people can be adjusted well into their advanced years with no ill effects. People suffering from bone disease or osteoporosis may need special spinal care if they are exceedingly “brittle”.

Question 5: Should My Child See A Chiropractor?

Answer: Yes.

It would be the right thing to do. Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns immediately checked for vertebral subluxations.

Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off can be traced to the spine. Health problems that emerge in adulthood could often have been prevented by having the spine checked by a chiropractor in early childhood.

Question 6: Can A Person Who Had Back Surgery Get Adjustments?

Answer: Yes.

Half of the people who have undergone spinal surgery actually discover a return of their original symptoms months or years later. They then face the prospect of additional surgery. This too common occurrence is known as “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome”.

Chiropractic may help prevent repeated back surgeries. In fact, if chiropractic care is initially utilized, back surgery can often be avoided in the first place.

Question 7: Is A Good Workout the Same As Getting Adjusted?

Answer: No.

Exercise is an important part of good health. Yet without normal spinal function, a physical workout merely puts additional wear and tear on improperly functioning spinal joints.

Chiropractic should be used as a compliment to exercise. It will prevent injuries and boost performance.

Question 8: Can I Go Only Once?

Answer: Of course.

Once is better than never. In fact, sometimes a spinal problem may be due to nothing more than a slight spinal misalignment rather than long standing spinal nerve stress (vertebral subluxations).

In that case one visit may be all that is needed. However, chiropractic is really more than a glorified aspirin. It is always best to ask your chiropractor what your spinal care needs are.

Question 9: What Will Happen If I Stop Going?

Answer: Spinal stress will continue to build up as before. The only difference is that it will not be reduced and treated from chiropractic care.

In a way chiropractic is like a safety valve, releasing pressure from your system. If the pressure stays high or if the stress is un-relieved, then the body and overall health will suffer.

Question 10: How to Find the Best Chiropractor for Your Treatment?

Answer: Look up patient reviews.

It is always best to have a look at what other “real” patients say about the chiropractor you are researching. It will give you an honest opinion, since reviews are written of free will by people from their own initiative.

Search on Google for: Chiropractor reviews + your location.

If you are living in the Bayridge, Brooklyn or Chelsea, Manhattan area, you should definitely look up what Dr. Adam Nachmias’s patients write about him.

Why Chiropractic Is Superior for Musculoskeletal Pain

Why Chiropractic Is Superior for Musculoskeletal Pain

Why Chiropractic Is Superior for Musculoskeletal Pain - Get Pain Relief at Nachmias ChiropracticCountless studies have demonstrated that chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to treat musculoskeletal complaints like back pain, neck pain, or sciatica.

Now a new study from Switzerland has looked at the relative benefits of chiropractic compared to medical care for the most common types of pain issues.

In this study, the authors examined data from people who reported spinal, hip, or shoulder pain. 403 patients saw a medical doctor for relief; 316 people saw a chiropractor.

Four months after treatment, the patients were asked to fill out a survey reporting on their recovery.

Chiropractic vs. Medical Care

The authors found that:

  • Patients initially consulting MDs had significantly less reduction in their numerical pain rating score.
  • Patients who saw MDs were significantly less satisfied with the care they received and the outcome of that care.
  • Patients who saw a chiropractor had significantly lower healthcare costs for their treatment.

Conclusion of Study

The conclusion of the study indicated that patients should first be referred to a chiropractor for musculoskeletal problems, rather than a medical doctor:

“The findings of this study support first-contact care provided by DCs as an alternative to first-contact care provided by MDs for a select number of musculoskeletal conditions. Restrictive models of care in which patients are required to contact a medical provider before consulting a chiropractic provider may be counterproductive for patients experiencing the musculoskeletal conditions investigated and possibly others.

In addition to potentially reducing health care costs, direct access to chiropractic care may ease the workload on MDs, particularly in areas with poor medical coverage and hence enabling them to focus on complex cases. The minority of patients with complex health problems initially consulting a chiropractic provider would be referred to, or co-managed with, a medical provider to provide optimal care.” (Source: chironexus.net).

Chiropractic Research: Vaginal Birth After Multiple Cesareans Following Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Research: Vaginal Birth After Multiple Cesareans Following Chiropractic Care

Vaginal Birth After Multiple Cesareans Following Chiropractic Care

Case Study & Selective Review of the Literature

Why Is Chiropractic Adjustments Essential to
Vaginal Childbirth?

“You wouldn’t drive a car if it was out of alignment, so why would you prepare for birth that way? I would attribute how smooth my labor and delivery was to the chiropractic care I received during my pregnancy and labor…” —Jenn Lovett, Irving, TX

This quote from Jenn Lovett speaks for itself. The reason behind a complicated, long, and pain-full labor, which often results in cesareans, is positioning. As anybody intimately acquainted with labor and childbirth knows, the baby’s position can be just as important as the mother’s.

Yet sometimes all the education, preparation, and exercise in the world will not ensure a properly positioned baby if the mother is not receiving good chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Is Often the Missing Link When It Comes to Natural Birth Preparation

A balanced spine and pelvis are essential to a healthy vaginal birth. However, it is never too late to prepare for a healthy birth. The case study below, presents proof of how a women with three prior cesareans, was able to have a vaginal birth.

To review the management of a 39-year-old woman seeking a vaginal birth after three caesarean sections (VBAC3) while under subluxation-based chiropractic care.

Clinical Feature

A 39-year-old woman was referred into a chiropractic clinic for pregnancy related low back pain and to increase possibility of a vaginal birth after three caesarean sections.

Interventions and Outcomes

After referral to the chiropractic clinic the patient was assessed for an initial examination using static and motion palpation, postural analysis, prone leg checks, thermography and surface EMG.

Following the initial examination, specific chiropractic adjustments were initiated using the Webster and Diversified chiropractic techniques for a total of 14 visits recommended over an 8-week period prior to the patient giving birth.

The patient made significant improvement and was able to have a vaginal birth after three previous caesarean births.

There is limited research on women attempting vaginal birth after caesarean sections and the role of vertebral subluxation management. This study suggests positive outcomes through chiropractic care during pregnancy for women attempting a vaginal birth after caesarean section.

Further studies should be done on this topic as many women have a concept of once they have a caesarean section that is the only option for future births (sources: chiropracticpediatrics.sharepoint.com & pathwaystofamilywellness.org).

Ensure a healthy vaginal childbirth with the help of Dr. Adam Nachmias – Nachmias Chiropractic. Dr. Adam has extensive knowledge and experience in treating pregnant women. After balancing the spine and pelvis, he will also provide exercises and stretches that are safe and beneficial during pregnancy.

Your Smart Phone Is More Damaging to Your Neck than You Think

Your Smart Phone Is More Damaging to Your Neck than You Think

Your Smart Phone Is More Damaging to Your Neck than You Think - Visit Nachmias Chiropractic Bayridge and Chelsea

Text neck or turtle neck are the terms used to describe neck pain and damage sustained from looking down on your cell phone, tablet, or other wireless devices, too frequently and far too long.

Bending your neck to look down has been a problem for many years and does not occur only when texting, but pain symptoms related to this bad posture have increased tremendously the last decade due to over-use of smart phones, tablets and lap tops.

We all have to look down to read, depending on the position we are in. The optimal position when reading, texting or browsing the Internet, would be keeping the book or equipment at eye-level position. Of course this would be the ideal position in a perfect world. However, if you are not a chiropractor or physiotherapist, you may not be aware of this.

The problem with texting or browsing your phone is that it adds one more activity that causes us to look down. Also, people tend to do it for much longer periods in this modern technique era with cell phones, iPads, and lap tops that sometimes work better and more efficient than regular stationary computers.

The especially alarming factor is that young growing children could possibly cause permanent damage to their cervical spines, which could lead to lifelong neck pain.

What Are the Symptoms Associated with Text Neck?

Text neck most commonly causes neck pain, headaches or migraines, and soreness. In addition, looking down at your cell phone or tablet too much each day can lead to:

  • Upper back pain, ranging from a chronic nagging pain to sharp severe upper back muscle spasms.
  • Shoulder pain and tightness, possibly resulting in painful shoulder muscle spasm.
  • If a cervical nerve becomes pinched, pain and possibly neurological symptoms can radiate down your arm and into your hand.

In fact, research has shown that craning the neck over a smart phone or cell phone texting, tweeting, checking Facebook or Google+, can exert an extra 60 pounds of weight on the head of an adult, leading to potential spinal problems and maybe even surgery.

The farther your head falls forward, the more dramatically the weight increases on your neck and spine (source: spine-health.com).

Good Advice to Prevent Text Neck

Like we touched base on in the beginning of this article, there are some preventative measurements you can take to avoid text neck:

  1. Hold your cell phone at eye level as much as possible. The same holds true for all screens; laptops and tablets should also be positioned so the screen is at eye level and you do not have to bend your head forward or look down to view it.
  2. Take frequent breaks from your phone and laptop throughout the day. For example, set a timer or alarm that reminds you to get up and walk around every 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. If you work in an office, make sure your screen is set up so that when you look at it you are looking forward with your head positioned squarely in line with your shoulders and spine.

Find out more information about the negative effects of texting here.

How Can Chiropractic Help Text Neck?

With the help of chiropractic adjustments your spine can be re-aligned back to its normal position, which will relieve you from pain, headache, stiffness, and soreness. If you are hunching down frequently because of work or just love being on your phone, it is highly recommend visiting a chiropractor for regular check ups and spinal alignments.

Tired or Flu Symptoms After Chiropractic? Nachmias Chiropractic Explains Why!

Tired or Flu Symptoms After Chiropractic? Nachmias Chiropractic Explains Why!

Tired or Flu Symptoms After Chiropractic? Nachmias Chiropractic Explains Why!Feeling particularly tired after a chiropractic session is very common. In fact, it is a good thing! In this issue we are going to present a common reaction to chiropractic treatments, called toxic release.

After visiting the chiropractor, especially if it is your first time, you may experience what chiropractors prefer to call a toxic release. This will appear as slight cold or flu-like symptoms and/or tiredness. It is not due to the clinic being unhygienic or from the chiropractic adjustment itself, but from a condition called toxic relief.

What Is Toxic Release?

Up to 20 percent of patients experience this condition after receiving chiropractic adjustments, and although it sounds scary, it is actually a positive reaction. When undergoing chiropractic manipulations, the toxins in our bodies are being released. After treatment the toxins leave the body as waste when visiting the restroom. This is positive for the body and makes it healthier and stronger.

Unfortunately, the expelling of these toxins can cause some temporary unpleasant symptoms. Just know that it is only your body adjusting to the expulsion of all negative energy, and the symptoms will soon pass. Some of the symptoms you may experience if your body does go through toxic release are:

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Night sweats
  • Tight muscles and/or
  • Diarrhea

Say good bye to body toxins! Book your chiropractic treatment with Dr. Adam Nachmias – Nachmias Chiropractic and improve your body’s energy flow and functions with one treatment only.

Improvement in Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms Following Upper Cervical Chiropractic Adjustment

Improvement in Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms Following Upper Cervical Chiropractic Adjustment

Improvement in Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms Following Upper Cervical Chiropractic Adjustment

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that progresses slowly in most people. Most people’s symptoms take years to develop, and they live for years with the disease.

In short, a person’s brain slowly stops producing a neurotransmitter called dopamine. With less and less dopamine, a person has less and less ability to regulate their movements, body and emotions.

Parkinson’s disease itself is not fatal. However, complications from the disease are serious; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rated complications from PD as the 14th top cause of death in the United States.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help Parkinson’s?

The study below shows proof of a decrease in symptoms of Parkinson’s disease after being treated with chiropractic care. Find out more by reading the study:

Abstract of Study

The objective of this case study is to report on the positive health outcomes of a 76-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease undergoing chiropractic care for correction of vertebral subluxations and postural distortions.

Clinical Features:
A 76-year-old male presented with a primary complaint of Parkinson’s disease, with symptoms of right-sided tremors, memory loss, balance issues, constant leg pain, occasional poor circulation, and decreased muscular strength. The patient was formally diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease by his neurologist.

Intervention and Outcomes:
A Quantum Spinal Mechanics 3 (QSM3) Method utilizes upper cervical radiographs, a supine leg check, digital posture measuring device and grid. The algorithm was applied in the correction of upper cervical vertebral subluxations and postural distortions. Positive outcomes included a more balanced atlas (C1) vertebrae in orthogonal positioning and an improvement in postural distortions over a course of six months. The patient’s signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease decreased.

This case presents evidence of a link between vertebral subluxations, postural distortions and the expression of Parkinson’s disease and advocates that more research needs to be conducted for healthcare providers to best serve patients with neurodegenerative disorders (source: uppercervicalsubluxation.sharepoint & parkinson.org).

If you or a loved one suffers from Parkinson’s disease, you should definitely give chiropractic a try. There is nothing to lose, only a better health to gain.

Painful Menstrual Cycles – PMS & Dysmenorrhea – Chiropractic Can Help!

Painful Menstrual Cycles – PMS & Dysmenorrhea – Chiropractic Can Help!

Painful Menstrual Cycles - PMS & Dysmenorrhea – Chiropractic Can Help! Nachmias ChiropracticEvery month, the female body goes through a series of changes that serve to prepare it for a possible pregnancy. For all women, hormone levels go through a series of peaks and valleys in a 28-day cycle (on average). It is precisely coordinated with only one end result in mind: to create and birth a child.

The 3 main processes of the menstrual cycle are:

  1. Ovulation
  2. Fertilization
  3. Implantation

When everything goes as planned, each month an egg (ovum) is released from the ovary. The uterus prepares for a potentially-fertilized egg to be implanted in its nutrient-thick walls.

It takes about three days for the ovum to make its way through the fallopian tubes (during which time it may be fertilized by sperm) and into the uterus, where the actively dividing group of cells is to be implanted.

If fertilization does not occur within this window of time, the brain and body receive signals to start this cycle all over again. As this happens, the inner lining of the uterus is released, triggering the bleeding stage of the menstrual cycle, which typically lasts about three to seven days. This process is though on the female body in a number of ways.

What Is Dysmenorrhea and PMS?

Even though the menstrual cycle is a natural physiological phenomenon, it can be extremely painful for some women – both physically and emotionally.

When a woman experiences severe physical pain and cramping during the menstrual cycle, she is diagnosed with dysmenorrhea. However, if she experiences a combination of physical and emotional symptoms just prior to the onset of menses, then she often gets diagnosed with pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS).

Up to 90% of all young women are estimated to experience some form of dysmenorrhea. Another 75% to 85% of females will suffer from various degrees of PMS during their lifetime. Women have to suffer a lot in regards to menstrual cycles.

How Can Chiropractic Help PMS & Dysmenorrhea?

If you are a woman, you know how painful menstrual cycles can be. Often, we accept the pain and emotional suffering as being a “normal” state, and are just trying to suffer it through until the next cycle, when we in fact not have to!

Low back pain and stomach cramps are a common combo during menses. The back pain is often displaced pain from the reproductive organs and these organs depend upon a healthy nervous supply from the lower spinal column. If the nerves threads between the reproductive organs and the spine are somehow blocked, it can lead to menstrual pain, cramping, and irregularities.

Putting the lower spine back into proper alignment with chiropractic adjustments will relieve the pressure on these nerves going to the reproductive organs, relieving both menstrual and lower back pain.

A healthy nervous system boosts the overall immune system. It also ensures that the body can cope with emotional difficulties like PMS, stress, and depression, since it allows for a proper serotonin release.

Evidence Supporting Chiropractic Care for Problematic Menstrual Cycles

Most medical practitioners suggest anti- inflammatory or analgesic medications to help ease the pain caused by these problems. This will only reduce the pain symptoms temporarily, but does not continuously help your menstrual cycles get easier.

Anti-inflammatory medications can also come with other unwanted side effects, such as even more stomach pain due to a reaction to strong chemicals.

A recent study of 13 female chiropractic patients with dysmenorrhea got helped using a specific chiropractic technique referred to as the drop-table method. Over two menstrual cycles, subjects received three treatments per cycle, specifically adjusting spinal restrictions in the lumbosacral area of the spine.

They all responded favorably to treatment, with significant reductions in back pain and general abdominal pain (sources: up-chiro.com & horst-chiropractic.com).

Can Allergies Be Treated with Chiropractic Care?

Can Allergies Be Treated with Chiropractic Care?

Can Allergies Be Treated with Chiropractic Care? Nachmias Chiropractic

This time of year can be difficult for many allergy sufferers. Instead of enjoying the warmth and sunny days, people with allergies have to deal with runny noses, itchy eyes and sneezing. If you want to find out how you can get allergy relief – continue reading.

Hay fever erupts this time of year. Millions of people suffer from this condition, which causes the body to become hypersensitive to pollen and other environmental substances. Allergies cause a number of irritating symptoms that can make life miserable.

Hay fever is one of many allergies. An allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction: when you react to a substance that is considered to be harmless to most other people. Skin reactions, breathing issues, and irritations to the sinuses are some of the most frequent allergy symptoms.

“In developed countries, allergies are the most common cause of chronic illness—and they’re on the rise. As many as 40 percent of the world’s people suffer from at least one allergic condition, and in some countries allergies have increased by as much as 50 percent over the past decade” The Palmer Community.

The 5 most common allergies include:

  1. Pollen
  2. Grass
  3. Dust mites
  4. Mold
  5. Weeds

What Causes Allergic Reactions?

Your immune system recognizes and removes harmful substances from your body. Inflammation, sneezing, coughing, and vomiting are methods the immune system uses to expel any dangerous substance ingested by you.

However, an allergic response is when your immune system activates against a substance that is considered harmless for most people, but not for allergy suffers. What happens in a person with allergy is that the body interprets that this particular substance is potentially harmful to the body, which causes an allergic reaction.

The Body Tries to Remove Harmful Substances

When an allergic reaction starts, the body activates special immune cells called mast cells. On the surface of their membranes, these mast cells possess receptors that recognize substances considered either harmful or helpful to the body.

When harmful substances are detected, the cells release histamines. These chemicals sensitize the body to react and the body tries to remove all harmful substances by sneezing, coughing, etc.

Why Do Some People Get Allergies?

So far, no one really knows why some people get allergies and some not, but recent studies indicate that people that are hypersensitive get allergies.

Researchers have found that if you have a high sensitivity to stress, your body also reflects this sensitivity. The body and mind are connected entities. In fact, stress and allergies provoke similar inflammatory responses—and studies have shown that stress exacerbates the immune system’s already hyperbolic response to allergens.

Chronic stress also wears out the adrenal glands, which produce the anti-inflammatory hormone cortisol. Without enough cortisol to subdue the allergic response, symptoms can become even more severe.

Another theory is that an allergic reaction is an interpretation of a person’s environment. In order to interpret, your body must first get information, which is gathered by the nervous system. If your nervous system is dysfunctional, then the information interpreted will be altered, and this makes you vulnerable to abnormal reactions like allergies.

Can Chiropractic Treat Allergies?

If you have researched what chiropractic care is all about before, you already know the beneficial effects of chiropractic adjustments on the nervous system.

It is well documented by now that chiropractic:

  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Regulates stress hormones, and
  • Supports the respiratory system

Therefore, it is not surprising that many chiropractic patients report a reduction of allergy symptoms when treated regularly for vertebral subluxations.

Misalignment or dysfunctional movements of vertebra can cause a focal irritation in the spine, which then creates an abnormal signal received by the nervous system. When this aberrant signal occurs along the same pathway required for the input of normal environmental messages, the body may not interpret the information correctly. When this occurs, it can result in an allergic reaction (source: upchiro.com & blogs.palmer.edu).
