Back Pain – Is It Caused By My Low Back Or My Hip?

Back Pain – Is It Caused By My Low Back Or My Hip?

Back Pain - Is It Caused By My Low Back Or My Hip? By Nachmias Chiropractic

For patients with low back pain, it is not uncommon for pain to arise from areas other than the low back, such as the hip. There are many tissues in the low back and hip region that are susceptible to injury with having overlapping pain pathways, which often make it challenging to isolate the truly injured area. Hip pain can present in many different ways.

Why Is It Hard To Know Where the Pain
Is Coming From?

When considering the anatomy of the low back (lumbar spine) and hip, it is often difficult differentiating between the two conditions, since the nerves that innervate the hip come from the low back. Complaints may include the inside, outside, front, or back of the thigh, the knee, the buttocks, the sacroiliac joint, or the low back and yet, the hip may truly be the pain generator with any of these presentations.

To make diagnosis even more complex, the hip pain patient may present one day with what appears to be sciatic nerve pain (that is, pain shooting down the back of the leg to the knee if mild or to the foot if more severe) but the next visit, with only groin pain.

When pain radiates down a leg, the almost automatic impression by both the patient and their healthcare provider, is that it is a pinched nerve causing the pain. But again, it could be the hip and not a pinched nerve that is creating the leg pain pattern.

The Possibility Of Several Pain Conditions
At the Same Time

Throwing yet another wrench in the works is the fact that a patient can have more than one condition at the same time. So, they truly may simultaneously have both a low back problem and a hip problem.

In fact, it is actually unusual to x-ray the low back of a hip pain patient without seeing some low back condition(s) like; degenerative disk disease, osteoarthritis (spurs off the vertebrae), or a combination of these.

How Do We Differentiate Between Hip Vs. Low Back Pain When It Is Common For Both Low Back and
Hip Pain To Coincide?

During a consultation, chiropractors often ask the question, “…what activities make your pain worse?” If the patient replies that weight bearing activities like standing, walking, getting up from a sitting position and so forth provokes the pain, and they point to the front or side of the hip, a hip-related diagnosis is favored. However, it still may be arising from the low back or both.

If they say, “…crossing my right leg over the other hurts in my groin,” then it is getting more hip pain-specific, as hip rotation is frequently lost before the forward flexion motion. When we ask the hip pain patient to point to the area of greatest discomfort, they usually point to the front of the hip or groin, and less often to the inner and/or anterior thigh or knee. Non-weight bearing positions like sitting or lying are almost always immediately pain relieving.

How To Know When It Is Arthritis?

When there is arthritis in the hip, motion loss is often reported and may include a shorter walking stride and pain that usually gets worse the longer these patients are on their feet. Initiating motion often hurts, sometimes even in bed when rolling over.

During the chiropractic examination, with the patient lying on the back with the knee and hip both bent 90°, moving the bent knee outwards or inwards will almost always reproduce hip/groin area pain. Pulling on or applying traction to the affected leg usually feels good.

Knee and ankle reflexes and sensations are normal, but muscle strength may be weak due to pain. Bending the low back into different positions does not reproduce pain if the pain is only coming from the hip. Though sometimes challenging, doctors of chiropractic are well-trained to be able to differentiate between hip and low back pain, and will treat both areas when it is appropriate (source:

September Chiropractic Health Month 2017 – Back Health Basics

September Chiropractic Health Month 2017 – Back Health Basics by Nachmias Chiropractic

September Chiropractic Health Month 2017 focuses on back health basics — the importance of overall health and injury prevention as key strategies in maintaining spinal health throughout a lifetime.

Back Pain Remains One Of the Most Prevalent and Disabling Conditions Worldwide

It is one of the most common reasons that patients visit their doctors, and one of the most common conditions for which doctors prescribe pain medications. It is estimated that up to 80% of people will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives.

Opioid Painkillers – A Wide Spread Problem

In addition, with the overuse and abuse of prescription opioid painkillers in the United States still a major public health issue, it is essential for health care consumers to understand that spinal manipulation and other conservative treatments can treat common musculoskeletal conditions, such as back pain effectively and safely.

Chiropractors focus on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health and function. Chiropractic services are used most often to treat conditions such as; back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches/migraines. What people know less about is that chiropractic also treats other conditions like; allergies, asthma, stress and depression, vertigo, fibromyalgia, work related injuries, and regulates blood pressure.

Widely known for their expertise in spinal manipulation, chiropractors practice a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care that includes patient examination (even x-rays when needed), diagnosis and treatment. In addition, their training encompasses therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises and nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling.

Chiropractic Research: Improvement In a Child With Autism Following Chiropractic Care to Reduce Vertebral Subluxations

Improvement In a Child With Autism Following Chiropractic Care to Reduce Vertebral Subluxations

Case Study and Selective Review of the Literature

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences.

We now know that there is not only one type of autism but many caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences. The term “spectrum” reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed by each person with autism.

Autism’s most-obvious signs tend to appear between 2 and 3 years of age. In some cases, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months.

Chiropractic Has Proven to Reduce Autism Symptoms

Early intervention can improve outcomes, and chiropractic adjustments have proven to be very effective in reducing autism symptoms. Read this case study of a 6-year-old boy with autism and how chiropractic manipulations made it possible for him to start focus socially and stop using medication.

Abstract of Study

To describe and discuss 6 weeks of subluxation-based chiropractic care in a 6-year-old boy, who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Clinical Features

A 6-year-old boy presents with aggressive behavior, hindered social and physical activities, poor eating habits, and sleep difficulties. The boy was previously diagnosed with Autism by a neurologist.

The patient was assessed for subluxations and adjusted using the Diversified Technique (the Diversified Technique entails adjustments with a high velocity, low-amplitude thrust delivered by hand and possibly with assistance from a table or block).

The 6-year-old boy was provided 15 treatments over the course of 6 weeks with subluxation-based chiropractic care. The young patient was assessed using a thermal scan, static surface electromyography, motion and static palpation.

The results from the case study included decreased time taken to fall asleep, improved sleep quality and sleep time, a decrease in aggressive behavior, and an increase in alertness. Also, increased focus and agreement to finish school-related work.

Patient Was Able to Discontinue Use Of the Medications; Risperidone and Tenex

This case study demonstrates the reduction of ASD symptoms and impairments with the use of subluxation-based chiropractic care (sources:, &

The Secret of Chiropractic

The Secret of Chiropractic

The Secret of Chiropractic - Nachmias Chiropractic Tells You the Truth

What is the secret of chiropractic you may wonder? How is it that the demand for a chiropractor is consistently increasing? That is exactly what we will tell you in this issue.

The answer lies in the power of chiropractic adjustments. Our days are filled with micro-stresses – meaning stresses placed upon our bodies that negatively affect how we function. These stresses can slowly wear down our body’s immunity – leaving us susceptible to disease and injury.

Let us present some actions that often cause micro-injuries, which potentially can lead to more severe injuries:

  1. Sitting down at a computer desk most of the day. This is actually the worst scenario for the body. It is not made for sitting down a whole day and the sitting position puts enormous pressure on the spine.
  2. Repeating a single motion several times throughout the day.
  3. Lifting heavy objects without thinking of correct lifting posture and bending the knees. Have a look at our Back Care Program to see how to properly lift objects:

Chiropractic adjustments prevent these severe injuries by correcting the cause of micro-injuries before they become severe.

Furthermore, chiropractic adjustments also increase immunity (that in turn can fight illness, allergies, stress, depression, insomnia etc.), physical performance, and eliminate pain.

What Happens During A Chiropractic Adjustment?

Micro-injuries cause the bones in the body to get locked up or fixated, which limits our range of motion. The bones remain locked up or hypomobile when we move and bend which can cause pain. During the adjustments your chiropractor applies light pressure to the joints to free up the vertebra and restore motion.

Also, the joints above and below the hypomobile joint get compromised as well. They will bend too much in trying to compensate for the immobile joints. This is called hypermobile. By restoring motion to the joints that are locked up, chiropractors restore health and function to the body.

Why the Popping Sound? What Is It?

The “popping sound” that can be heard during chiropractic adjustments is the release of three types of gasses; oxygen, nitrogen and CO2. They create the sound when they are opening up the joint. In fact, it is very similar to the effect of removing the cork from a champagne bottle and just as pleasant.

When the gasses are released, the fluid within the joints lubricates the joint surfaces restoring movement and nerve function. The same thing happens when one of the joints in your fingers is locked up and you crack your knuckles. You hear a ‘pop’ and you feel instant relief (source:

Conclusion the Secret of Chiropractic

The secret with chiropractic is the fantastic health benefits chiropractic adjustments bring to the table. A chiropractic treatment is a non-invasive way of treating the cause of common symptoms. Why go under the knife when you can heal your body naturally?

More and more people are discovering this and stay faithful to their chiropractors. Patients who experience chiropractic care are also quick to recommend the treatment to friends and family. As more and more people experience the benefits of chiropractic, the demand for this natural form of healthcare continues to rise.

Patients Are Amazed How Good They Feel After A Treatment!

Depending on how long your joints have been locked up and how severe the injury determines how quickly you will feel relief, but most people feel better right away.

The saying goes “health is wealth”, so treasure your health while you have it. Protect it, and prevent injuries by allowing your body to heal itself.

How to Choose the Right Chiropractor

Living with Adult Scoliosis and Treatment Options

Living with Adult Scoliosis and Treatment Options - Nachmias ChiropracticLiving with Scoliosis is not easy. However, depending on the severity and location of pain, degenerative scoliosis in adults can be treated with one or more non-surgical options, and the absolute best option is chiropractic care. Let us break this statement down further.

What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. The spine is naturally designed with three curves, creating an “S” shape from the side. An adult person with scoliosis will have a lateral (side-to-side) curve, greater than 10 degrees, which often results in an “S” or “C” shape from the front or rear view of the body.

This curve is not always detectable to the eye, but you can notice scoliosis through noticeably uneven shoulders, waist or hips, a rib hump or, prominence of the lower back on the side with the curvature.

Symptoms of Scoliosis
In most cases symptoms of scoliosis start with low back pain. Later on, the increased pressure on nerves, due to the scoliotic curve, can lead to weakness, numbness and pain in the lower extremities. Severe cases of scoliosis can result in the loss of coordination and mobility.

What are the Goals of Non-Surgical Treatments for Scoliosis?
Most adults with degenerative scoliosis do not need surgery. The goals of non-surgical treatments are to:

  • Reduce pain.
  • Increase strength
  • Improve posture.
  • Increase flexibility and range of motion.

Different Types of Scoliosis Curves and Causes:

  • Idiopathic Curve: This is the most common type of scoliosis. Often there is no clear cause of the spinal curve.
  • Congenital Curve: “Congenital” means the spinal abnormality was present at birth. These cases are rare and typically diagnosed in childhood. See prior article: Chiropractic is the Answer to Treat Scoliosis in Children.
  • Paralytic Curve: This curve is often the result of a spinal cord injury. Paralytic curve means that the muscles around the spine do not work, which in turn can cause abnormal curvatures of the spine.
  • Myopathic Deformity: Similar to paralytic, myopathic means that the muscles do not work properly. This can result in atypical curves in the spine caused by conditions such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy or polio.
  • Secondary Scoliosis: Includes other spinal conditions that affect the vertebrae, such as degeneration, osteoporosis and osteomalacia, and that can cause scoliosis.Spinal surgery can also result in an imbalance in the spine, leading to a scoliosis diagnosis.

You can treat some of the pain symptoms with pain killers, like Ibuprofen, or other medications that treat inflammation from arthritis, epidural or facet injections.

Your Best Treatment Option – Chiropractic Care
However, the healthier and more effective treatment method is chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments and spinal manipulations can by an experienced chiropractor, like Dr. Adam Nachmias – Nachmias Chiropractic, keep the facet joints mobile and help reduce pain.

Chiropractic cannot reverse scoliosis, but the improvement of joint mobility from adjustments can decrease pain, increase comfort and improve posture. Chiropractors can also address other symptoms or, issues the patient may be experiencing, and help prevent further degradation of the spine (parts taken from: &

Unfortunately, many people with scoliosis believe that they are stuck with this painful condition and that there is nothing to do about it. Others have even adapted to the pain.

You do not need to despair and suffer, because there is help to get. Dr. Adam Nachmias –  Nachmias Chiropractic is here for you! He will not only relieve you from pain, but also improve your posture so you can feel less self conscious, and better about your appearance.

Furthermore, during Dr. Adam Nachmias’s years as a professional chiropractor he found a genetic link to Scoliosis in families. If there is an immediate family member (i.e. parents, children, brothers or, sisters) that suffers from scoliosis, you should get examined too. There is a chance that you may have scoliosis as well.
