Reduction and Maintenance of Scoliotic and Sub-Scoliotic Curvatures

A Follow-Up Study on Children with Idiopathic Scoliosis Undergoing Subluxation Corrections by Nachmias Chiropractic

Like mentioned in prior article – Chiropractic is the Answer to Treat Scoliosis in Children – many children suffer from idiopathic scoliosis, or abnormal curvatures of the spine.

This condition can be very painful. The earlier small curves are corrected, the less likely they may progress to more serious curves.

Why Does Children Get Scoliosis?

Several factors are thought to contribute to the cause of idiopathic scoliosis, including genetic, neuromuscular, hormonal, and biochemical causes. The eventual result of these causes is an abnormal curving of the spine, which can be harmful to your child’s health.

The spinal nerve interference can lead to all sorts of dysfunction and this is certainly true with scoliosis, and other spinal curvatures. “Considering the fact that every single function of the body is controlled by the nervous system it should not surprise anyone that removing interference to the neurology that controls the muscles and joints of the spine would lead to improvement in the curves” remarked Dr. McCoy.

What Happens If Scoliosis Goes Untreated?

If scoliosis goes untreated it may lead to following conditions and symptoms:

  • Curve progression
  • Loss of pulmonary function
  • Increased overall mortality
  • Increased mortality in women due to cancer
  • Increased prevalence of self-reported arthritis
  • Negative perception of ones health
  • Increased difficulty in basic physical tasks
  • More days of limitation due to sickness, injury, and other health problems, and
  • Increased prevalence and intensity of back pain

Like you probably understand by now, scoliosis affects your child’s long term health and should be taken seriously.

Below is a study showing how chiropractic adjustments, focusing on correcting subluxations (blockages of the spine) in children, had a drastic improvement on scoliosis. The final results indicated a reduction of 62.1 % in curve size of the spine.

Abstract of Study

Objective: The purpose of this study is to add to the lack of follow-up research on chiropractic-managed scoliosis by reinvestigating a previous case series on AIS patients under the Pierce Results SystemTM (the Pierce Results SystemTM, only focuses on correcting vertebral subluxations).

Methods: This study was reviewed and approved by the institutional review board of the Foundation for Vertebral Subluxation. All original 36 subjects were re-studied. The subject was included in this study if they were currently under care and had an additional ‘post’ AP lumbopelvic X-ray.

20 subjects (10 in the scoliosis group and 10 in the sub-scoliosis group) met this criteria and their latest film was measured using the Cobb-Lippman method. For the 20 included subjects, the mean curve size decreased an additional 12.9%, since initial care was given.

The total correction was 46.8%, which was statistically significant (p<0.05). In the scoliosis group, there was a 14.4% decrease initially, followed by an additional 7.6% reduction.

Final results totaled to 31.5% correction in scoliosis size since beginning of chiropractic treatments. The sub-scoliosis group initially had a 61.5% decrease, followed by an additional 18.2% reduction. The final results totaled to a 62.1% correction in curve size.

Conclusions: These results suggest that:

#1. The Pierce Results SystemTM may provide a way to reduce scoliotic curvatures by removing vertebral subluxation without the aid of other interventions.

#2. Specific adjusting of vertebral subluxations could help decrease scoliotic curves with minimal risk of curve regression. However, more follow-up research is needed on chiropractic management of scoliosis  (parts taken from: calldradam.com, chiropracticchronicle.com & chiropracticpediatrics.sharepoint.com).

Can Chiropractic Help My Knee Pain?

Can Chiropractic Help My Knee Pain?

Can Chairopractic Help My Knee Pain? Nachmias ChiropracticNot sure if you should receive chiropractic for your knee pain? Maybe, you even doubt, or cannot understand how chiropractic can help treating knee pain in the first place? Well, those are exactly the questions we are going to answer with this article.

As a matter of fact, chiropractic can be one of your best options to treat knee pain (that is, if it is not pain due to an acute accident). Why live with the pain? Why reducing your activity level and start taking pain medication when you do not have to? We all know that pain killers are not good for the health and often come with bad side effects.

A licensed chiropractor, like Dr. Adam Nachmias – Nachmias Chiropractic can address the underlying issues that are likely to be causing your knee pain.

The Complexity of Knee Joints
The knee is a complex joint, which relies heavily on ligaments and muscles for stability. When pain is perceived as coming from the knee, all the anatomical components need to be examined, and in addition to the knee joint, the lower back, pelvis, hips, ankles and the feet, need to be examined due to the direct influence they have on the knee, and vice versa.

Pain can often be referred from other structures in the lower back, pelvis and hip, into the knee. If other joints in the lower limbs are not working as they should, they can put stress on the knee joint, resulting in injury over time. This is why athletes often develop knee injuries and pain after a while of intense wear and tear.

When Should I Get Chiropractic Treatment?
There are several signs indicating it may be time to seek treatment from your chiropractor. The main reason to seek treatment is if the knee pain is severe enough to limit your ability to function in your every day life. You do not have to accept living with constant knee pain.

Find more signs to when it is time to seek chiropractic for your knee pain:

  • If the knee pain is limiting your day-to-day, or sport activities.
  • If you have been given painkillers, or taken anti-inflammatory medication and been ordered rest, but still no improvement.
  • If you have been told that your knee pain is due to arthritis and there is nothing that can be done.
  • If you have knee pain with restricted motion.

There are usually several angles of approach when it comes to treating knee pain. Often you use a combination of:

  1. Using ice to reduce inflammation around the joint.
  2. Soft tissue massage to help improve the knee’s range of motion, and
  3. Chiropractic manipulations and mobilization techniques.

The combination of methods can help reduce knee pain drastically, while simultaneously increasing range of motion in the joint and improving its overall function
(parts taken from: thejoint.com & normandalechiropractic.com).

With the help of Dr. Adam Nachmias, issues causing knee pain can be corrected, so you can live a pain free life.

Hot New Results from Chiropractic Research 2017

Hot New Results from Chiropractic Research 2017 by Nachmias Chiropractic

Feeling stuck in your life, and not yet reached personal fulfillment? A chiropractic adjustment might be what you need to give you a needed nudge in the right direction. Be inspired from the hot topics from new chiropractic research below.

Increase Your Creativity with Chiropractic
In most cases, most of us will schedule an appointment with the chiropractor when we are feeling aches and pains in our back, or neck. However, did you know that a chiropractic adjustment might be just what you need to take your creativity to the next level?

Researchers in Australia have discovered a trend suggesting that this could be a fact.

Ten subjects were recruited for a study; their ages ranged from 10 to 62. Nine out of ten were currently involved in a task that included some form of creative thinking. Seven of the subjects were also experiencing some musculoskeletal symptoms, and three people reported some stress, or stress-related symptoms at the time of the study.

All subjects were tested before and after chiropractic adjustments using the alternate uses test – a tool used to measure divergent thinking, a component of creative thinking.

Results: Six out of the ten subjects experienced improvements in their performance on the alternate uses test. Responses from post-adjustment interviews showed that a majority of the study subjects experienced renewed energy for their creative project, plus a tendency to implement a new direction for a the creative task as well.

Increased Performance from Chiropractic Adjustments
Does improved alignment contribute to increased performance? Let us answer that with this next study.

According to an elite athlete, his chiropractic experience was undeniably positive. The results speak for themselves! The athlete in the study was a 50-year old male race walker that was undergoing chiropractic adjustments, while preparing for a world-class event.

Prior to chiropractic intervention, this athlete held several state and national records in this endurance sport for various distances – including the 10 km national record and the 15 km state record.

The treatment included chiropractic adjustments to the spine to correct identified subluxations, and also adjustments to both legs to improve mobility and alignment of his tibiofemoral joints.

Results: Four days after the first chiropractic session, he recorded his personal best (PB) in the 15 km distance (better than the current state record, established by him 1 year previously).

Two more treatments were administered during the month prior to the World Masters event, and two more PB times were recorded – this time in the 5 km and 10 km distance events (parts taken from: www.creativehealing.ca).

This report suggests that chiropractic care can be used for more than just aches and pains.

Benefits with Pediatric Chiropractic

Benefits with Pediatric Chiropractic

Benefits with Pediatric Chiropractic - Nachmias ChiropracticPediatric chiropractic is extremely safe if you make sure to visit an experienced chiropractor, like Dr. Adam Nachmias – Nachmias Chiropractic. The main difference adjusting a child is that the contacts need to be smaller and the thrust more shallow with less force.

Children have the same joints as adults, but they are not yet fully formed. Their joints are still more cartilaginous than truly bony, so the adjustments have to be a little bit faster, but with less force. This is due to the increased flexibility within the joint and the smaller surface area you are targeting. Another option with children in certain cases is to mobilize joints rather than manipulating them.

Chiropractors have the lowest malpractice rates of all primary health care providers in the country, and those rates are based on risk.

Chiropractic Treatment of Chronic Ear Infections in Children

One of the most common reasons parents bring their children to the chiropractor is for management of chronic ear infections.

How can a chiropractor treat ear infections you may think?
Let us explain this process as easy to understand as possible. When a child develops ear infections, the biggest issue is that fluid is getting trapped in the middle ear cavity, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.

Medically, you normally use an antibiotic to kill the bacteria and viruses, but that does nothing about the fluid buildup.

The reason to fluids building up is when the muscles surrounding the Eustachian tubes are spasming, this reaction can close down the tube’s opening and not allow the fluids to drain.

What Dr. Adam Nachmias does to prevent chronic ear infections is to stop those muscles from spasming, and allow the fluids to drain freely from the Eustachian tubes.

In fact, there is a good reason to heal ear infections in children naturally through chiropractic adjustments. Namely, because of the large amount of pediatric patients that got treated with antibiotics (about 585,000 patients in 2009) required medical attention.

Chiropractic Care Beneficial for Other Disorders and Pain Symptoms

Chiropractic has also been shown to help childhood developmental disorders and syndromes, like cerebral palsy, ADHD, autism, post-stroke, down syndrome etc.

By adjusting subluxations (blockages) of the spine, the nervous system can flow freely and function at its best, allowing the body to reach its fullest potential, and improve quality of life for the child.

There is no legitimate scientific proof of chiropractic for developmental disorders, but parents to children with these disorders have announced an improvement in their child’s behavior (parts taken from: www.acatoday.org).

Make sure your child gets a good start in life. Visit Dr. Adam Nachmias – Nachmias Chiropractic for a chiropractic exam and consultation. We will treat your child like it was ours, and promise you that he/she will be in excellent hands. Dr. Adam has more than 26 years experience in pediatric chiropractic.

Living with Adult Scoliosis and Treatment Options

Living with Adult Scoliosis and Treatment Options - Nachmias ChiropracticLiving with Scoliosis is not easy. However, depending on the severity and location of pain, degenerative scoliosis in adults can be treated with one or more non-surgical options, and the absolute best option is chiropractic care. Let us break this statement down further.

What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. The spine is naturally designed with three curves, creating an “S” shape from the side. An adult person with scoliosis will have a lateral (side-to-side) curve, greater than 10 degrees, which often results in an “S” or “C” shape from the front or rear view of the body.

This curve is not always detectable to the eye, but you can notice scoliosis through noticeably uneven shoulders, waist or hips, a rib hump or, prominence of the lower back on the side with the curvature.

Symptoms of Scoliosis
In most cases symptoms of scoliosis start with low back pain. Later on, the increased pressure on nerves, due to the scoliotic curve, can lead to weakness, numbness and pain in the lower extremities. Severe cases of scoliosis can result in the loss of coordination and mobility.

What are the Goals of Non-Surgical Treatments for Scoliosis?
Most adults with degenerative scoliosis do not need surgery. The goals of non-surgical treatments are to:

  • Reduce pain.
  • Increase strength
  • Improve posture.
  • Increase flexibility and range of motion.

Different Types of Scoliosis Curves and Causes:

  • Idiopathic Curve: This is the most common type of scoliosis. Often there is no clear cause of the spinal curve.
  • Congenital Curve: “Congenital” means the spinal abnormality was present at birth. These cases are rare and typically diagnosed in childhood. See prior article: Chiropractic is the Answer to Treat Scoliosis in Children.
  • Paralytic Curve: This curve is often the result of a spinal cord injury. Paralytic curve means that the muscles around the spine do not work, which in turn can cause abnormal curvatures of the spine.
  • Myopathic Deformity: Similar to paralytic, myopathic means that the muscles do not work properly. This can result in atypical curves in the spine caused by conditions such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy or polio.
  • Secondary Scoliosis: Includes other spinal conditions that affect the vertebrae, such as degeneration, osteoporosis and osteomalacia, and that can cause scoliosis.Spinal surgery can also result in an imbalance in the spine, leading to a scoliosis diagnosis.

You can treat some of the pain symptoms with pain killers, like Ibuprofen, or other medications that treat inflammation from arthritis, epidural or facet injections.

Your Best Treatment Option – Chiropractic Care
However, the healthier and more effective treatment method is chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments and spinal manipulations can by an experienced chiropractor, like Dr. Adam Nachmias – Nachmias Chiropractic, keep the facet joints mobile and help reduce pain.

Chiropractic cannot reverse scoliosis, but the improvement of joint mobility from adjustments can decrease pain, increase comfort and improve posture. Chiropractors can also address other symptoms or, issues the patient may be experiencing, and help prevent further degradation of the spine (parts taken from: spine-health.com & chiroone.net).

Unfortunately, many people with scoliosis believe that they are stuck with this painful condition and that there is nothing to do about it. Others have even adapted to the pain.

You do not need to despair and suffer, because there is help to get. Dr. Adam Nachmias –  Nachmias Chiropractic is here for you! He will not only relieve you from pain, but also improve your posture so you can feel less self conscious, and better about your appearance.

Furthermore, during Dr. Adam Nachmias’s years as a professional chiropractor he found a genetic link to Scoliosis in families. If there is an immediate family member (i.e. parents, children, brothers or, sisters) that suffers from scoliosis, you should get examined too. There is a chance that you may have scoliosis as well.

Chiropractic is the Answer to Treat Scoliosis in Children

Chiropractic is the Answer to Treat Scoliosis in Children

Chiropractic is the Answer to Treat Scoliosis in Children - Nachmias Chiropractic

Recent research has shown that children with scoliosis and curvatures of the spine experienced huge improvements after undergoing chiropractic treatments.

The study from the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic was performed on 36 children with scoliosis.

“Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and structural abnormalities such as scoliosis” stated Matthew McCoy DC, MPH, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study. McCoy continued “What makes this study unique and interesting is that it is the largest research study of scoliosis involving chiropractic adjustments as the sole intervention”.

According to the authors of the study the prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is estimated to be within 2-3% in children aged 10-16.

If scoliosis goes untreated it may lead to following conditions and symptoms:

  • Curve progression
  • Loss of pulmonary function
  • Increased overall mortality
  • Increased mortality in women due to cancer
  • Increased prevalence of self-reported arthritis
  • Negative perception of ones health
  • Increased difficulty in basic physical tasks
  • More days of limitation due to sickness, injury, and other health problems, and
  • Increased prevalence and intensity of back pain

In conclusion, scoliosis can affect a person’s long-term state of health and well-being when not treated.

What Causes Scoliosis?
Several factors are thought to contribute to the cause of idiopathic scoliosis, including genetic, neuromuscular, hormonal, and biochemical causes. The eventual result of these causes is an abnormal curving of the spine, which can be harmful to your health.

Scoliosis can also be very painful. The earlier small curves are corrected, the less likely they may progress to more serious curves.

McCoy.
(Parts taken from: chiropracticchronicle.com)

Nerve interferences are what chiropractors call subluxations, and that is what
Dr. Adam Nachmias – Nachmias Chiropractic specializes in adjusting (removing) on a daily basis.

Dr. Adam has helped so many people with scoliosis and curvatures of the spine for more than 26 years to live pain free, healthy lives.

Reduction in Frequency & Severity of Erectile Dysfunction and Chronic Low Back Pain in 53-Year-Old with Chiropractic

Reduction in Frequency & Severity of Erectile Dysfunction and Chronic Low Back Pain in 53-Year-Old with Chiropractic

Reduction in Frequency & Severity of Erectile Dysfunction and Chronic Low Back Pain in 53-Year-Old with ChiropracticMost men, at some point in their lives, will experience erectile dysfunction. According to the “Merck Manual for Healthcare Professionals, at least 10 to 20 million men in the U.S. suffer from erectile dysfunction.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
The cause of erectile dysfunction can be both physical and emotional. It can be as simple as a side effect from a medication, stress, relationship issues, or be a sign of an underlying health condition like; diabetes or heart disease. Apart from psychological causes of erectile dysfunction, these are some possible physical causes:

  • heart disease
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol
  • low testosterone levels
  • metabolic syndrome
  • obesity
  • multiple sclerosis
  • excessive alcohol consumption
  • pelvic subluxations

Chiropractic adjustments helped a 53-year old man that was partaking in a case study (see below) by Howard & Harry Hadley, both B.A., D.C. Undergoing a series of adjustments resulted in improved erectile function. The adjustments also made him pain-free from low back pain.

Abstract

Objective
To record the improvements seen in a 53-year-old male patient with a history of erectile dysfunction and chronic lower back pain.

Clinical Features
The man first presented for chiropractic care with a chief complaint of lower back pain. He had a 20 year history of low back pain and erectile dysfunction, initially disclosing only the low back pain. Chiropractic examination revealed the presence of vertebral and pelvic subluxations.

Interventions and Outcomes
Each visit included the use of instrumentation, static palpation, motion palpation, and visualization to accurately determine when and where subluxations were present. Chiropractic adjustments utilizing Gonstead methodology were performed whenever corrections were found necessary.

Gonstead methodology is characterized by its specific hands-on adjusting of only the offending segments of the spine and extremities. Accuracy is all important to the Gonstead chiropractor.

After eight weeks of care (12 adjustments) the patient was pain-free and able to exercise comfortably. He continued care for a chronic lumbar subluxation and was able to experience improved erectile function as well.

Conclusion
Chiropractic adjustments utilizing Gonstead methodology has been shown to effectively reduce the effects of vertebral subluxation. This has allowed the patient to live without chronic pain and experience improved erectile function

Chiropractic Helps Children with Development Delays and Other Conditions Such As Bed Wetting, Colic, Ear Infections etc.

Chiropractic Helps Children with Development Delays and Other Conditions Such As Bed Wetting, Colic, Ear Infections etc.

Chiropractic Helps Children with Development Delays - Nachmias Chiropractic

Never doubt the importance of chiropractic for children. A child has a spine and nervous system just like an adult and it is important to make sure to take good care of your child’s spine and nervous system, especially during the developmental years.

The Nervous System Controls the Whole Body
The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord, and is the body’s machinery. From the spinal cord there are nerves that go to every organ, gland, tissue, muscle and cell of the whole body. If there is a blocking (subluxation) in the “machinery” or any of these nerve paths, a child could react with a wide range of health issues (examples below).

Children encounter many traumas at an early age, or even before they are born, which can shift the spine out of alignment. The traumas can include events such as; intrauterine constraints, birth trauma, malpositioning (breech), c-section, birth intervention (forceps/vacuum suction) and falls.

When a subluxation of the spine happens, it needs to be corrected through chiropractic adjustments. If not, the spine will continue to grow “crooked” and cause health issues, such as:

  • Constipation
  • Colic
  • Bed Wetting
  • Ear Infections
  • Torticollis
  • Fussiness
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Reflux etc.

Later in life, this can create trouble with:

  • Focus
  • Behavior
  • Mood
  • Hyperactivity
  • Digestion
  • Asthma / Allergies
  • Headaches / Migraines
  • Sensory Integration

A child that encounters chemical stressors like; vaccines, antibiotics, medication and diet, but also emotional stress (fear) will also cause a protective (fight/flight) response or tension within the musculature that supports the spine. These tense muscles can also misalign the spine and cause subluxations.

The child may even be hindered to develop speech and other motor skills if the nervous system has blockages. A professional chiropractor, like Dr. Adam Nachmias at Nachmias Chiropractic, can help with many childhood conditions and most importantly prevent them from happening.

To highlight how important chiropractic care is for children, we want to highlight this study by Chiropractic Pediatrics of a child with development delays, and the positive effects chiropractic had on him.

Improvement in Speech & Coordination Following Chiropractic Care in a Child with Developmental Delays and Vertebral Subluxation

Objective: This case report describes the chiropractic care of an infant with developmental delays.

Clinical Features: A two-year-old male presented for chiropractic consultation and possible care at a chiropractic clinical training center with developmental delays in speech and coordination. Symptoms included below average locomotion skill, delayed auditory comprehension and expressive communication, and difficulty swallowing certain textures.

Intervention and Outcome: The patient was cared for with Diversified Technique appropriate for his age. Outcome measures independently applied demonstrated improvement in the infants gross and fine motor skills based on comparative and baseline Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 (PDMS-2) scores while improvements in auditory comprehension and expressive communication were measured with the Preschool Language Scale-5 (PLS-5).

Conclusion: The successful chiropractic care of an infant with developmental delays was described. This study provides supporting evidence that infants with similar complaints may benefit from chiropractic care. (Parts taken from: onelovechiropractic.com & chiropracticpediatrics.com)

Apart from this study, over 80 percent of normal childbirths result in neck injuries to the baby. Furthermore, according to an OSHA study 40 percent of all children fall on their head before their first birthday. These results indicate even more reasons to take your child to regular chiropractic check-ups.
Dr. Adam Nachmias has more than 26 years experience of chiropractic care and knows exactly how to treat your beloved child. He will discover possible subluxations after one examination / consultation only, and will set up a customized treatment plan for your child. Clinical Features: A 52-year-old female presented for chiropractic care with frequent and severe neck pain, neck stiffness, and pain in the upper back.  A neutral lateral cervical x-ray displayed anterolisthesis at C4-C5 measuring 2.4mm (ideal is 0mm). Also present was an anterior head translation measuring 19.66mm (ideal is 0mm) and an absolute rotational angle from C2-C7 measuring -22.8° (ideal is -42°).

Intervention and Outcomes: The patient received chiropractic care 30 times over 3 months using Chiropractic BioPhysics® technique protocols. Follow-up examination revealed that the patient achieved a correction of her C4-C5 spondylolisthesis from 2.4mm to 0.7mm. Her anterior head translation was reduced from 19.6mm to 9.0mm, and the absolute rotational angle from C2-C7 improved from -22.8° to -26°. The patient also reported a resolution of her pain, stiffness, tension, and swelling symptoms.

Conclusion: This case study demonstrates the successful reduction of cervical spondylolisthesis and improvement of sagittal spinal alignment and cervical lordosis in a 52-year-old female with cervicothoracic pain and postural abnormalities using Chiropractic BioPhysics® technique.  Further research is suggested for either a case series or clinical trial to see how conservative chiropractic care can negate the need for surgical intervention of cervical spondylolisthesis.

Study 2.
Improvement Following Chiropractic Care in an 11-year-old Male with Traumatic Brain Injury

Objective: To describe the chiropractic care of a child with difficulties in upper and lower extremity motor control.

Clinical Features: An 11-yr-old male presented for chiropractic care with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a result of a motor vehicle collision 5 years prior. The patient lacked proper motor control and use of his left hand and lacked balance and co-ordination of the lower extremities. The patient had difficulties with speech and was unable to find balance on a global wobble board and took 5 minutes to find balance on a uniplanar wobble board and held it for 5 seconds.

Intervention and Outcome: The patient received chiropractic adjustments characterized as high velocity, low amplitude (HVLA) thrust type known as Diversified and Thompson Technique. In addition to adjustments, neuromuscular re-education was utilized to provide increased coordination for left upper extremities and proprioception for lower extremities. The patient received care over a period of 8 months consisting of 28 visits. As a result of the care he received, the patient demonstrated improved coordination, is able to balance on the global wobble board, is better able to enunciate words and has an improved quality of life.

Conclusion: This case report provides supporting evidence on the effectiveness of chiropractic care in children with traumatic brain injury.
